Essential Preservation Tips for Antique Books

1) Control Climate

Keep temperature around 18–21°C (65–70°F) and relative humidity near 40–50%. Avoid attics, basements, and radiators. Use a hygrometer to monitor changes and a dehumidifier if needed—especially in coastal regions of the UK and humid US states.

2) Handle with Care

Wash and dry hands before use; consider clean cotton or nitrile gloves for glossy plates. Support spines with a cradle and never force a tight binding open. Turn pages from the fore-edge, not the corner.

3) Use Archival Materials

Choose acid-free boxes and sleeves. Avoid PVC. For shelving, use inert bookends and avoid packing too tightly. Slipcases and phase boxes provide additional protection for fragile bindings.

4) Light Management

Limit exposure to direct sunlight and strong LEDs. UV filters on windows are helpful. Store especially sensitive items in closed cabinets and display only for short intervals.

5) When to Consult a Conservator

Tears, detached boards, red rot, or mold require professional attention. Seek an accredited conservator; document any treatment for your records.
